A traffic management personnel who is normally stationed on busy roadways to assist pedestrians is known as a crossing guard (North American English), lollipop man/lady (British, Irish, and Australian English), crosswalk attendant (also Australian English), or school road patrol (New Zealand English). Crossing guards, who are frequently connected with elementary school students, stop the flow of vehicles so people may cross a junction. The most common nickname for crossing guards in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia is "lollipop lady/man," a reference to the huge placards used that resemble lollipops. lollipopping is a word that may also be used to describe road construction.
